PDF Protection - Frequent Questions
How does CopySafe PDF compare
with other PDF readers?
CopySafe PDF security, encryption and copy protection is far superior to all other PDF protection solutions. In fact, in comparison, one can wonder why you would bother with the others at all especially when most do not actually provide copy protection and those that claim to do so are falsely advertising or are only trying to imitate ArtistScope products. Those that copy our products can only provide awkward and expensive solutions such as weak encryption, flawed protection against screen capture, remote viewing vulnerabilities, expiration that is easily foiled, and passwords that are easily cracked. Also, when it comes to DRM protection, they are still trying to understand how our DRM can provide total control with immediate effect, even on documents that have already been downloaded by the user. How to prevent screen capture when using remote viewing?
When a CopySafe PDF document is opened on a remote computer
using a virtual
application, the document cannot be opened. For clients
requiring that remote viewing is possible, it can be enabled by
selecting the appropriate option when protecting the document.
Should the CopySafe PDF Reader be distributed with my
files?
Yes. The CopySafe PDF reader is required to decrypt and read the documents which are, by now, in
.ENC format. You can bundle the reader installer with your distributed documents
but it is strongly recommended to only provide a link to the download page, which
will ensure that
your users will get the latest version regardless of the date of your
distribution.
Does CopySafe PDF increase in file size when
it is protected?
No. CopySafe PDF documents converted as library files
(ENC) are the same size as the original.
Can CopySafe PDF viewing be restricted to individual users?
To properly enforce individual user rights to view your
documents, you need to use a PDF Reader that is integrated with a
DRM solution and CopySafe PDF Reader does support the
DRM add-ons available from
ArtistScope. CopySafe PDF Reader also supports PDF documents that are protected by
ArtistScope DRM.
With these DRM options, users can effectively control those who can
access the document, for how long, and even limit the number of times the
document can be viewed or printed.
Can the number of times a PDF is viewed or printed be limited?
Yes. When published with DRM, your CopySafe PDF
documents can be limited to a finite number of views and print that can never be
exploited. For example, in a ticket or voucher scenario where the
user is emailed a link to their receipt or voucher online, they can be limited
to printing only one copy. Or they could be emailed the ticket but they can only
print it once.
Can CopySafe PDF be searched from the Internet?
Protecting a document and then exposing its contents to the web would be a very dumb thing to do! For this reason, this is simply not possible.
Can CopySafe PDF be searched within the document?
Yes. The PDF Reader
does have a search option for finding keywords or phrases in a document.
Can CopySafe PDF prevent unauthorized distribution of
documents?
Yes and it is the only solution that can control user access without
purchasing an enterprise solution and dedicated server. Click for more
information on the PDF add-ons
for DRM.
Can our developers create a copy protected application?
The first thing to realize is that our CopySafe Service does not “pseudo protect" documents. Some applications provide weak solutions and that is why their protection is full of holes. The next thing to realize is that what may be secure today may not be secure for long and for this reason; the solution needs to be updateable. Finally, the development team needs to be on the ball continually to update and maintain efficacy of the solution as well as to keep abreast of new threats as they arise.
ArtistScope invented copy protection for the Internet at a time when everyone thought it impossible. And now, more than a decade later, ArtistScope still provides the only solutions that are secure, which should give you an idea about its authority when it comes to copy protection.
DRM Add-ons for use with CopySafe PDF Protector
CopySafe PDF protector includes both a Windows GUI (executable) and a COM object
that has been specially optimized for command-line operation. The COM object
can be used via a DOS prompt or run from a .bat file. However, to increase the
scope of its use, there are now additional add-ons to enable you to use the
Protector online, running server side and controllable from your web pages.
Webmaster's Note:
CopySafe PDF is by far more secure than all other eBook and PDF document
protection solutions because it was designed to be so. Performing a web
search on "extract password from PDF" or "remove DRM from eBooks"
can provide an insight to how
useless most document protection solutions really are. Any similarities
between the total control management of documents provided by ArtistScope DRM
and the "claims" of others are mostly inspired and pioneered by ArtistScope DRM.
CopySafe PDF is ideal for the distribution of documents
by download and on CD, but if your documents are to be
viewed from your website, then you should check
out the ASPS Web Reader which is specially designed for copy protecting web content
instead of exposing it like other web browsers do. ASPS
provides the most secure copy protection for all web
page content including PDF, Flash and video. |
